Dear Chamber Music Friends,

Travelling with my cello around the globe,I often notice that German culture is internationally identified with the great German philosophers and composers of the romantic period and the cultural achievements of the 19th century. Robert Schumann stands right in the centre of this tradition, his music still reflecting on the ideas of the French revolution and at the same time being deeply personal, drawing on his own emotional experience. Celebrating the bicentenary of his birth, we take the opportunity to explore the Romanticism in German music. What could be more suitable than the gorgeous chamber music of Schumann, Brahms, and Mendelssohn, as well as Bruckner and the early Schoenberg? Their great works of chamber music were written for the “music salon”, in a spirit of contemplation, reflection and at the same time are often bursting with temperament and emotion. It seems that chamber music was an ideal genre for these composers and therefore it is not surprising that these works belong to the very best music ever written.

The Moritzburg Festival Academy will tackle an orchestral work of monumental importance whose composer, Beethoven, was an early pioneer of Romanticism: the “Eroica” symphony. In it’s fifth year the Festival Orchestra will study and performthis, one of Beethoven’smost magnificent works, breathing new life into the symphony through the combination of young, highly gifted musicians from all over the world and the vivacious Mexican conductor, Alondra de la Parra, who at 29, is a rising star on the world stage.

Furthermore we’re greatly looking forward to welcoming Daniel Schnyder as our Composer-in-Residence 2010. His life andmusic reflects a perfect balancebetween the European musical tradition and the influence of American Jazz and World Music. He regularly appears in clubs in New York as well as in the most important concert halls throughout the world. With his ingenious and imaginative compositions he facinates audiences on both sides of the Atlantic.

I would like to thank all private and public patrons and sponsors for making our Festival possible.

I wish you all a marvellous summer full of great music.

Yours sincerely

Jan Vogler
